KayakNav provides Navigation facilities in terms of:

  • A live Map showing your current location and heading.
  • Your planned Route with lines to show where you are going and where you have been.
  • Info Cells that report many different Data Items including speed, distance travels and remaining, ETA etc.
  • A Targeting Beam that indicates the direction and distance to your next Turning Point.
  • A Compass showing your present bearing, the bearing to the next Turning Point and visual course tracking indications (coloured compass areas).
  • A KayakNav North Pointer that always points North.

It continuously reads data from the GPS, Compass to plot your location, speed and bearing. If the GPS signal is lost, KayakNav uses the compass and your previous average speed to generate approximate GPS coordinates and continue navigating your route until the signal returns. This is similar to a car GPS when you enter a tunnel in the city.

KayakNav uses the Start Line and Finish Line to start/stop timers and email statistics at the finish. It assumes that you will follow the planned Route from the Start Line to the Finish Line via all intermediate Turning Points and Waypoints. You can reverse the course by using the Reverse Command Button. You can skip Turning Points by a long press on the map and the targeting will jump to the next Turning Point.
