The Compass appears at the bottom of the display and provides a number of features.

The compass provides:

  • A horizontal display of your current compass bearing in degrees. Significant bearings are noted in large text such as the NW in this image indicating North-West. The compass rotates left and right. It is positioned to be unobtrusive and to allow the maximum space for the Map.
  • The pink, yellow and green background moves to indicate how well your bearing aligns with the optimal Route to the next Waypoint. If you are on course, the red marker will be in the yellow band of +/- 10 degrees.
  • The large red triangle in the centre-bottom points to your current bearing.
  • The smaller dark red arrow in the centre-top marks the position of the next Waypoint and is always in the centre of the yellow area.
  • The small red Error Bar shows the compass error reported by iOS which in this example is +/- 4 degrees.
  • The text in the bottom-left of the compass is the name of the currently loaded Route and changes to blue when it is loaded from the database.
  • The text in the bottom-right of the compass is Simulator or Live followed by the version number of KayakNav. In the screen shot we are running KayakNav in Simulation Mode on version 2.5.

The compass can be used to control KayakNav as follows:

  • Control screen brightness by swiping right or left. This saves having to use settings on the device and can often be used when the device is mounted in a waterproof case.
  • Tap the left side of the compass to show the list of Info Cells and drag them onto the Map.
  • Tap the right side of the compass to show the Command Buttons for actions like loading Routes, Emailing etc.
  • Tap the Info button to display in-app help.
  • Tap the centre of the compass to clear the pop-out menus and show the map.
